Domestic fire safety is often reduced to owning an alarm. The building itself does most of the work, provided its original features have not been quietly dismantled.

Detection is about time, not fire

An alarm does not prevent anything. Its function is to compress the interval between ignition and the occupants becoming aware, which is when escape is still straightforward.

That interval matters most at night, when smoke can incapacitate sleeping occupants before heat or noise wakes them. This is why placement on escape routes is emphasised.

Different detector types respond to different conditions, and units have a service life after which the sensing element degrades, so replacement is periodic rather than optional.

Compartmentation slows the spread

Walls, floors and doors resist fire for a period, which is what allows occupants to leave and keeps a fire in one room rather than the whole house.

Fire-resisting doors on a stairwell exist to protect the escape route. Held open, removed, or replaced with a lighter door, they no longer perform that function.

Holes made through compartment walls and floors for cables, pipes and downlights create paths for smoke, which is why alterations can reduce a building's performance invisibly.

Escape routes need to work in the dark

The route out is normally the stairs and the front door, and it works only if it is unobstructed and if the door can be opened without hunting for a key.

Windows used as a secondary route need to open and to lead somewhere survivable, which is a different question on an upper floor.

Requirements for escape provision, detection and door specification in dwellings are set by local building regulations, which differ by jurisdiction and are revised regularly.

Where domestic fires typically start

Cooking, electrical faults, heating appliances and unattended flames account for the bulk of domestic ignitions, and each has a maintenance dimension.

Electrical distribution boards, aged wiring, overloaded extension arrangements and appliances left running unattended are the recurring themes in the electrical category.

Chimneys and flues serving solid fuel appliances need sweeping and inspection, because deposits accumulate and a disused flue may be defective without anyone noticing.

Flats are a different problem

In a block, the safety of one dwelling depends on the construction of every other and on the common parts, which are outside any individual resident's control.

Evacuation strategies differ between buildings, and residents need to know which applies to theirs rather than assuming the approach used elsewhere.

Alterations by one resident that breach a compartment wall affect neighbours, which is why leases require consent for work that most owners regard as internal and private.
